Weekly Video: Video Blog Reflection

Weekly Video: Common ASL Phrases

Google Map

This map is of the places that I stopped on my cross country journey to starting college in 2005. I moved to La Mirada, CA to attend BIOLA University. This is another great way to log your travels!

I think that this site is great! I am not a professional photographer but I have taken some okay pictures. I think that this site could be great exposure for peoples pictures. It is nice that you can also have a setting for pictures. Making them public or private and also being able to use them. Geotagging was a great experience. I have been wanting to find a way to mark all of my travels that I have done and will be doing! This would be a great way to keep track of it all.

Resume

I am a Web 2.0 guru that wants to work for you. I have lots of social media experience, coding experience, and audio/video skills. I also have some web page developing experience. I am great at collaborating and have lots of ideas to share. I work great in both a team and individual setting. I am not only up to date on the mainstream tools but am familiar with other sites. I am hardworking and ready to take on the job.

Review Objectives

My original objectives:

1. Understand all the inter workings of what Web 2.0 is about. I would like to learn how to really use the web to interact through and not just as an information source.

2. Effectively use technology to reach my 21st century learners. Technology is such a huge part of children's lives and I want to be able to use it to effectively reach them in the classroom. I hope that this web 2.0 class can give me some great ideas to use in my classroom.

3. Get more experience with using social media sites regularly. I am very comfortable with sites like Facebook and Youtube. Through this course, I hope to become more experienced in using other forms of social media like blogging. I also hope to learn more about what other sites are out there besides the mainstream ones.

4. Experience and understand the positives and negatives to using web 2.0 and social media sites to communicate. I have an idea of some of these already. However, I feel that physically using these things will show something's that I might not have known otherwise.

I feel like my original goals were appropriate to what Web 2.0 is. I have a much larger understanding of what 2.0 actually is. Before taking this class I could probably guess but I didn't really know what web 2.0. I find myself a lot asking my self if what I am doing could be web 2.0. I am more in tune to what it is. I most definitely have learned more about how to reach my 21st century learners. Sites, accounts, and tips that I have learned from this class I will take with me. I have also most certainly become more acquainted with social media sites, more then I even knew  what out there. I could work on figuring out the positives and negatives to some of the sites we have used. Overall, I have been pleased with my experience so far!

CoachSurfing.com

This site was very interesting. At first I did not understand exactly what was meant by couch surfing. I mean I know what couch surfing is but I didn't quite get it. After looking through some profiles and doing some reading I got it. The idea seems pretty cool. Advertising for others to use your couch is most definitely beyond web 2.0. The difference between this site and those like Twitter & Facebook is that this could potentially require a face to face meeting. This site seems really cool for people who are traveling especially students or those who want to see the world. I like the fact that you have to give specifics in order to add "friends". It seems that this site takes friends more seriously because you may just have them sleeping on your couch. Very interesting site!

Slideshow- I used Quicktime Pro to complete this...

Video- I used a video that I had already uploaded to Youtube:

Audio- I used SoundCloud to record a part of the book "Oh, the Places You'll Go" By: Dr. Seuss

No License

I think that if I came up with or had a great song, video or photo it would depend on how much I valued it as to how far I would go. I would like to think that a photo or video I created I would be open to share. I wouldn't want money for anyone who used it but I would like the credit. So, I would share and others could as well as long as my name was credited in some fashion. As I think about this I think of all the things I have put on the internet for "free". All the youtube videos I have made, and anything that is on facebook can be easily taken but that doesn't bother me. However, if it was my career then maybe I would think of this differently. I also would have had that notion before I put them up for the whole world to see. Besides the fact that it is illegal it bothers me that others take credit for things that are not their own. At the very least I think we should give credit where credit it due. It is a respectable thing to do and shouldn't be taken so lightly.

On my journey to find my no licensed thing I came upon this website: The Best Copyright Free Photo Library. This site has some AMAZING pictures all being taken by a US government employee. I also didn't know that these photos are free of a copyright. I am not sure why the government has allowed so many photos to be shared by anyone. They give credit to each individual photographer even though it was apart of their job and I guess they believe it is enough. It is a great resource especially to be used in a history class. There are so many different categories/departments to look through.

This picture is of a volcano erupting in Hawaii and was taken in 1969.

Wikimedia

I reviewed wikisource which is a free library. It has thousands of texts in full copies for the use of anyone. I think that the idea of this is great especially for people like myself taking online classes. Since this is in it's beginnings there are a limited amount of text. There are many things that I have found so far that are very interesting. They have all kinds of journals, memoirs, notes, articles, books, even suicide notes and that is only the beginning. I think that this can become an excellent resource especially since this is not limited to one country (all kinds of cultures and people can contribute). It reminds me a lot of google text. The biggest difference is that some google text's are restricted until one pays and this source is free! I also got a pretty great laugh from the featured text "Shaving Made Easy".

I also reviewed wikiquote which is a page of quotes. There are so many different subcategories like: movies, people, tv shows, themes (education, history etc.), & categories. It seems to be a great source if you have an idea of a type of quote you are looking for. I think this is a great idea to have as a source. I know I am often looking for quotes to start my class off with, or to encourage my softball team and this would be a great use for that. As far as editing these myself I am not too sure. Often times just one word changes the whole thing and when people are quoted it should be exact. So, it may get a little interesting if anyone can edit them. Great idea though! They also have featured quotes and this is one from a while ago but still a good one "Life is too deep for words, so don't try to describe it, just live it." ~ C.S. Lewis

Photobucket, Youtube, & SoundCloud

Photobucket: I already had an account with this site but had not visited it in a while. It has changed a lot since I have used it. I normally use this site to share pictures with friends after we have went on some kind of trip. After playing around with it you can do quite a bit. You can edit, store, share, & print photos. I played around and made a collage from my recent trip to New Orleans.

Youtube: I again already had an account here as well. I really LOVE youtube. Not so much uploading my stuff (even though I am growing more accustomed to it!) but watching what people post. I think the creators of youtube are absolutely genius. The more I become involved in posting my own videos the more I realize what people go through when making their videos. I played around with this site by uploading my own videos (http://youtu.be/7B8BI8cAbcQ), and searching through other videos.

SoundCloud: This site was great! I am not a musician or will never record a track of my own but this site is so awesome to look through. I uploaded a track that my roommates recorded. It was a remake of the song "Dancing in the Moonlight". We had our own "band" called JAM (Jennifer, Angeline, Melissa) although we never actually sang it was still really fun! They made me a cd of our favorite songs when I moved back home and I thought I would share. I also created a profile and looked at other people's sounds. This is almost like a twitter but for music...one that I find more appealing than twitter!

Spring Break

I CANNOT believe that it is already spring break. I mean..I am VERY excited to have some time off because it is much deserved :) As I reflect on my year I have accomplished quite a bit.  I am officially through my 1st full year of teaching. I have learned so much from everyone and cannot wait to continue my career at a school that I LOVE. I am also half way through my 2nd semester of grad school! I have learned so much and am glad that I get to work with so many great people. I know that once school starts back on April 16th that things are going to get crazy. So, I will enjoy probably my last week of rest.

Blogging

This class has been extremely helpful and informative thus far. I have really enjoyed completing the tasks set before me. Some of the videos that have been attached to our assignments I have even shown to other teachers because I enjoy them so much. I have done quite a bit of things that I had never even attempted before. Like blogging, Tweeting, creating video blogs via Youtube, digging & editing Wikipedia.
I have really been able to become more in tune with social networking and really understand what Web 2.0 is. This class has also allowed me to broaden my definition of what social networking is. It is amazing how connected the entire world actually is. Before this class, I had only used the Internet to find out information or get onto facebook. Now I understand more about what it has to offer and how I can be better connected to others. I guess I understood blogs and forums but did not really understand them until I actually used them myself. I had a lot of preconceived thoughts about bloging, tweeting, and Wikipedia. It is nice to not have them anymore because I know what they are all about.
I am the type of person that sometimes needs to be pushed to try new things. I consider myself open-minded but not someone who will try new things on my own will. Therefore, I am glad that I am apart of a class that really pushes me to expand my horizons. Some sites/tools that I have found useful are: Schoology, Blogger, Twitter, Pintrest, Box, Glogster, Edmodo & Wikipedia.
Other than getting use to blogging and tweeting, I have also been challenged with completing video blogs. This was probably one of the hardest things to get use to doing. The more I do it the better it gets. I never really understood how hard it was to talk to a camera. You would assume that it wouldn’t be that difficult because no one is watching you while you do it but, its not. The first couple times I videoed myself I did not want to watch them back. Nevertheless, I did and it was just as bad as I had imagined it would be! However, the more I do it the more I am getting ok with it. I have enjoyed thinking of things to show about my life. I am not crazy about getting in front of the camera but I will do it. One thing that I really enjoyed and wished I could have seen before I did mine was the last Michael Wesch video. I really like the part about his class completing video blogs. It made me feel connected because mine was the same way!
I have really enjoyed the tasks that I have completed. I am excited to be nearing the end but know that I will have a different outlook on the Internet as a whole. I will also have a different outlook on Web 2.0 and its use’s and share that with others that I meet.

Digg

Digg, the social bookmarking site is interesting. I understand and like the idea of it. I also think the slogan "digg it" is very creative. However, I think that the site is very overwhelming. I know they have different categories but the main pages stories are so very random. I also think that part of that feeling comes from the design. It appears to be set up a little like facebook but I wish they would have come up with there own design. I think that as a whole the design of the pages comes off as over crowded and makes one feel overwhelmed looking for a story.  I don't think I would use this very often but I am glad I have had the opportunity to check it out!

Understand Wikipedia & Wikimedia

Working in the school system I hear a lot of things about Wikipedia. Almost every kid that comes into my room speaks about how their English teacher says they are not allowed to site it. When I ask why they say because anyone can edit it. If those people would actually edit it then they would know how it works. I use Wikipedia very often. And though I understand the teachers point in that students should source scholarly articles or even books. I appreciate what Wikipedia does and is trying to do. I enjoyed editing certain things. Although it was pretty challenging finding something to edit but overall it was an enjoyable experience.

Spring Break

Soo..it is the time of year that I look forward too! I am excited not only for the upcoming spring break but for Easter. I really enjoy being with my family and Easter Sunday. I can remember as a kid getting a new Easter dress and shoes every year...i really looked forward to that. I also loved dying eggs as a kid. My mom never hide the fake ones. We ALWAYS dyed eggs and hid them. There was only one year I that I can remember we couldn't find them all. Needless to say, we ended up finding it a couple of months later :/ Even though I am older and no longer do those things religiously I look forward to being able to carry on my traditions with my own kids.

Wikiversity

I thought that this site was interesting. I am not sure on how I feel about a class being held through it though. I personally think it could be manageable with the right teacher. I think that no matter how uneasy I feel about it, it may just be the future of schools or universities. It really does play upon the idea of participant observation. Editing and figuring out how things go would be perfect for someone majoring in web 2.0.

Michael Wesch Video 2

WOW...first of all what an awesome class to be able to take as an undergrad. I think that Michael Wesch is great. His video's are so informative and really make you stop and think about your place in the world. There were so many things that I got and am thinking about after watching this video. I really like the idea of participant observation and believe that this class does just that. Instead of studying about what blogging, twitter, or vlogging is we do it! I believe that it is an excellent way to learn and really immerse oneself.
I also agreed with many of the things he said about blogging. I could completely connect with all of those first time bloggers. I felt some of the exact same things. It continues to blow my mind that a little web cam or camera can really make you feel nervous or "like you don't know what to say". It makes perfect sense that some people show a completely different side to themselves. It is crazy to me that some of the most shy people are willing to video themselves and actually click upload for thousands possibly millions of people to see.
I truly believe that the creators of youtube are genus's. And I think my favorite part of the entire talk was the section on the phenomenon of Youtube. I see all the time the remakes of videos and it literally is a phenomenon. It becomes so catchy to do your own version. And it is not just 1 person but 1,000 people remaking it. It is truly unbelievable.  I think that youtube is one of the greatest examples of web 2.0. Partly because you can see and hear actual people but also partly because it connects the world. Regardless of what language you speak, or what culture one comes from everyone can connect to youtube. It is absolutely amazing. This has been my favorite video from this class so far!!

Twitter

I forgot to let everyone know that I have set up my twitter....you can follow me @jsweeney1808. I have enjoyed tweeting. I normally don't like writing status's especially on facebook but this has been interesting. I really enjoy following other people!

Tough Job

Next to teaching coaching has been one of the toughest jobs I have ever done. I enjoy it so much but it is hard to sit and watch sometimes. I laugh because some of the things that I tell my players are the same things that I tell them. It is almost like a light bulb has clicked because I actually get it all. Of course, it is a little to late because I don't play anymore. I never imagined what it would be like to coach and I don't think I would have been right. I am a coach but I feel for my players. I am frustrated when they are, I celebrate when they do, and  love the game as much as they do. I have really enjoyed it and can't wait to see what the rest of the year has in store for me!

Standing Broom

So, last week all over facebook there was a broom standing phenomenon! I think everyone of my friends posted something about it and of course I had to try it for myself. Most people who posted the broom said that it had something to do with the planets being aligned which turns out to not be true. I have to admit it does seem "magical" when you try it but balance is the only thing to blame. The article link explains a little more!

Wordle's

Wordle 1:

Wordle 2:

I enjoyed using this site. I have used it once before not for an assignment. I felt like the site was kind of hard to use. I could not figure out how to edit my wordle's and when I copied and pasted the code to get them to show up in my blog it did not work! So, that was a little frustrating.

Week 2 Video

As I was recording I was trying to remember the advice I was given. I don't know why a video camera makes me so nervous because I am the one recording. It is interesting how intimidating one little camera can be. I am slowly getting use to hearing and seeing myself. It is going to take some time!

Leap Year...

Happy Leap Year :) I think that it would be so weird to only have a birthday every 4 years...must be one heck of a party! There are so many traditions and celebrations that go along with leap year. Here is a link to an article I found pretty interesting...

Monday, February 27, 2012

Dear Nana,

I know you have a hard time just connecting to your email. I also remember the countless hours I have spent explaining how the internet works. So, I would like to tell you about what one of my grad school classes is all about. The class is called Web 2.0. Web 2.0 connects people to people. No matter where you are in the world you can be connected with others. It can be with people that you know or even people those you don't. The internet has become this world where you can interact with people just as you would face to face. Web 2.0 is simply the programs that allow you to do that. It lets you do every day things like journal, instantly communicate with friends, shop, pay your bills, or even see people face to face!

Love,
Jen

impromtu2.0

Web 2.0 is connecting the world through the web. When I think of web 2.0 things like blogging, facebook, youtube, & schoology come to my head. It allows people to connect and talk through the web much like what would happen in a face-to-face interaction.

Human Computation Reflection

I really enjoyed this video! It was very insightful and pretty funny. I think the idea of crowdsourcing is great. I have actually seen the "Life in A Day" movie that is made up of youtube posts. I thought that it was genius. It was a great movie and great way to get the shots to put it together.
The speaker Luis Von Ahn's idea is very intriguing. I really enjoyed how he opened his presentation. He mentioned the captcha's that are so often used when creating accounts and how these are used to make sure one is human. This then lead him to point out the importance of human computation. I believe his creation of using a game to get people to do things is genius. I mean why pay someone when there are people willing to do it for free? A lot of times when people play games on the internet it is for pure enjoyment. So, on the contrary why not use people who are already going to play games for nothing anyway do something positive. I feel like people use the internet to rip people off all the time. People everywhere pirate music, movies, or can even steal someone's identity. So, when we look at an idea such as crowdsourcing why not use it. I have come to find out two things that people tend to do when they contribute knowingly to the internet. The first is that most people will submit things that they work hard on or want to show off. The other is it is going into something larger. When people play Dr. Ahn's game they are not just winning the fake points they see but essentially, they are helping the internet!
I think overall the positives out way the negatives. Yes, there will be people who cheat or submit crap but that is true when any type of experiment or survey is done. I think that using the people who use the internet is the best way to build it up. I am curious now and want to find these his games and play them!

Into the swing of things..

I am working on getting more into the habit of blogging and tweeting. It has still been hard doing videos but I am working on that too! This week has been crazy at school. I have a lot on my plate but I feel like I am handling it pretty well. Teaching, coaching, taking 2 grad school class...yes it could be worse, I know :)

Tweeting

As I complete more of the tasks under the modules, I am finding out more and more of what web 2.0 is actually about. I think that this current module brings everything to it's basic meaning. Defining words, tools, and companies has helped to put this into a better perspective. It also allows me to see what my classmates have found and used to describe web 2.0. I am slowly getting into a routine with blogging and tweeting. Tweeting has been interesting. Before this class, I had never even visited the twitter site. I have enjoyed "following" people and seeing what they have to say. This has been an interesting experience so far!

Coach

So, this is my first year teaching at the high that I graduated from. While I was a student, there I was involved in quite a bit including playing volleyball and softball. I never played any sports in college at least not seriously anyway and it has always been a dream of mine to coach at the high school level. Well this week has started this dream of mine coming true! This season I have the opportunity to coach along side my old softball coach. It has been such a great experience and its only been the first week! As a player, I never imagined all of what actually goes into coaching a team. I have not gotten home before 7:00 any day this week....and this is only try out week! I understand and really appreciate even more what all of my coaches did for me. I cannot wait to see what the rest of the season has in store!

Teaching follow-up

I really enjoyed the first video about student learning! The whole idea about questioning student’s misconceptions makes a lot of sense. I often times find this true in history. My students do not learn theories or formulas but events and stories. I would 100% agree with the fact that students tend to zone out if they feel like they know the material already and actually miss learning the truth.

I really enjoyed seeing the "interviews" on the questions that we had to answer. When asked the questions on the first day of class I honestly could not recall the information. I felt like it was familiar but I could not really pin point the exact answer. I see that I was in fact wrong with my guesses. I can definitely relate to the people in the video, which means I am not the only one. Not only am I not the only one in the US but apparently in Australia too! I think that questioning the misconceptions is a great place to start. I just do not know how this would be achieved successfully. I guess a starting place is to know what misconceptions they have and go from there I will most definitely keep this in mind as I am creating lesson plans!

Thoughts about 1st video

This was very interesting and I can only see this getting more interesting! This had to be the hardest task to complete. It was weird and I felt awkward. Even though no one was in the room with me while I was recording myself I was still in a way nervous doing it. Of all the tasks we have to complete this will be the most challenging for me.

Thinking Differently, Doing Differently

The teacher inside of me was touched and changed by what I saw. The last video (seminar) was very touching. What a great way to be honored as an educator. I think the best part was the student in the beginning introducing him because his teacher had clearly touched him. Being a teacher myself it is very rewarding to have students say positive things about what you are doing. It is essentially what "makes it all worth it". Teaching has been one of the hardest jobs I have ever done. I definitely did not go into this profession thinking it would be easy but I really did not understand exactly what I was getting into. It is hard work. It is not only physically tiring but also mentally exhausting. I am challenged everyday by my students and even though at the end of the week I feel like I could sleep for a week every minute is worth it especially when you have positively influenced even just one child. I LOVED the advice his wife gave him before he started "Love your students and they will love you". It is something that I will take with me and share with my fellow colleagues.

After watching the second video, I felt a mix of things. It would be typical to say I was shocked but I am not. Some of the facts presented have been true about me at some point in my life. I also think that my students could agree with some also. It is so easy to get caught up in our own little worlds. Having the opportunity to go to school or buy a $2,000 laptop and not think anything about it. What about the world around us? Those that do not have nor will ever have the opportunity to spend 3 hours a day on facebook. And what about those that make less then $1 a day? How are we going to solve problems like poverty or war? After watching this and thinking about it I feel sad. Sad that this is the world we live in. I really enjoyed watching this clip because it has got me thinking. I mean I probably will never have the answer to solving poverty or world hunger but at least I can become more proactive about things that should matter. Maybe spend less time on facebook and more time helping those in need. I will be re-showing this video to my students. Most will probably not be affected but it may just get them thinking. And even if it only touches or changes the life of one student it would be time well spent.

Words are extremely powerful. Whether written or spoken they make the world in which we live go round. The second and third videos are prime examples of influencing the world through spoken and written words. This leads me to mention the first video, which was a great testament to words especially as they relate to this class. Not only is it a testament to words but also how we use the Internet all together. It has reminded me to be more cautious as to what I write and do especially on the Internet. These videos have been simple reminders that computers are machines but can be very influential especially noting how they have already changed the world.

Some sites worth exploring:
1) Schoology.com or edmodo.com...For any teachers that want to get their class online. This is set up so that the student can submit and see assignments. Schoology has an amazing gradebook and edmodo is set up very similar to facebook! It is simple and a great way for kids to keep up with their work.

2) Box.net...if you are looking for a flash drive online this is a great site. I use this for kids who do not have a flash drive. t holds their information. You get about 5 GB free and you can pay to use more!

3) Glogster.com...If you want to give your students a new way to present information (or if you want to prevent information) this site is a neat source. You can design and create pages that are colorful and creative.

Working...Working...Working...

I have been working very hard this week to keep up with my two grad school classes and three high school history classes!! It has been one heck of a week....to say the very least! I am so thankful that I have only one prep (US History) to worry about. For this class I currently have been working on my video. This I believe was the hardest task to do thus far. I have recorded what feels like 500 videos and like none of them. Even though it is frustrating, completing a task that I am not very fond of has pushed me outside of my comfort zone. It is nice to reflect back and see that it may have been frustrating at the time but that it is rewarding too!

Web 2.0 Course Objectives

Some objectives I have for this course are....

Definition of Web 2.0

I really like the idea of getting the next person to improve the definition. I think the process itself was fine. You could also post on the first posters blog. I understand for the sake of this class that our input only counts but this would be a cool idea to do on a blog for anyone. Thinking of an idea or statement and having the next person improve upon it. I can imagine that people might get pretty creative!

First Week

I am so glad to be getting on track and "caught" up. The problems I have encountered with technology this week have tested my "roll with it" personality type! So far, I have really enjoyed beginning this class. I can say that it had a very interesting start. One that that I am kind of excited about is getting out of my comfort zone. As I have been completing tasks, certain ones have already been challenging. The first thing that will be different for me is blogging. I have NEVER blogged before. I do not think that I would say I am a private person but not one that has never shared my life with the internet. I enjoy reading them but I will most definitely have to get use to writing them.  I think doing videos will also be challenging but nonetheless interesting. I am so very ready and willing to take on the challenges that will be set before me. Web 2.0 here we go!!
